There’s an energy in fall that matches its colors—crisp, cool, high-color. Each season has its own writing energy. It doesn’t matter what you write, this energy is concentrated in the words. Another interesting thing about writing and seasons is freelance writers are always thinking six months ahead for their articles, so seasonal topics we think about in October are Earth Day, Easter, Spring Equinox, Mother’s Day, start of summer vacation….

Quite different from this amazing photo.

It’s all you need to get your day started! I used to work in a huge hotel with a classic bakeshop. At 3am we were pulling croissant dough from the proofer, punching it down, rolling it out, cutting the triangles that would form the croissants, rolling them, letting them have another rise, then baking till golden. This card reminded me of those Octobers I kind of missed because I worked the night shift.

For those of you planning to participate in NaNoWriMo this year, you have just under a month to get ready. Some of the things you can do:

1. Make a calendar ahead of time. I know someone in Austin who makes a huge calendar, and it is the cover for all her notes and scribbles; it is her organizer for the whole month. With this calender you can map out what you’ll focus on for each day, what you’ll eat, who’ll you’ll write with, and when you’ll rest.

2. Map out your plot and structure. Character studies‚—short or long.
